For Parents - Facing Fear with Narratives
Editors Note: This article was prompted by September 11th, 2001, but the current war in Iraq makes it especially relevant once again.
Dr. Sally GelardinOn September 12, when Sumyyah Bilal, EUREKA's CEO, asked me to write this first article on career development issues for parents, I was still in a state of shock about the tragedies of the previous day. My daughter, a college student in Manhattan, saw the World Trade Center towers up one minute and down shortly thereafter. For me and many others, the aftershock of the terrorist attacks will not disappear quickly.
Normally, the articles in this section will focus on career development issues of parents and families. However, due to the current state of the country, this article addresses fear, and how parents can assist children in overcoming their fears, an issue that we, as well as our children, may need to understand, in order to find meaning in our life and work. Three techniques to assist parents help their children overcome fears are outlined: poetry, art, and storytelling.
