Nursing
Also called: Health Fitness Technician Training, Home Health Aide Training, Licensed Vocational Nurse, LVN Training, Mobile Intensive Care, Nurse Aide Training, Nurse Practitioner Training, Orderly Training, Primary Care Training, Psychiatric Technology, Registered Nurse Training, Sports Medicine Technician Training

Nursing programs are designed to teach people how to provide care for others who are sick, injured, or disabled, or to help others maintain health. This includes administering treatments, some of which are very sophisticated and technical, and medications. Many schools offer programs that intend to prepare people to be Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Psychiatric Technicians, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Nurse's Aides, and Home Health Aides. Programs vary in length and emphasis from a one-term course to a doctoral program in nursing. Nursing Assistant programs are offered at many Community Colleges with training intending to prepare people to work with a health care delivery team at a basic level. Vocational Nursing programs are one-year certificate programs, offered at many community colleges. They are designed to prepare people to care for patients by administering medication, monitoring equipment, changing dressings, and assisting patients with personal hygiene.

Nurse Practitioner programs are designed to prepare registered Nurses to provide a broad range of health services under the supervision of a licensed physician. A few schools in California offer certificate programs. You must have a bachelor's degree for admission to these programs. Typical course work includes advanced medicine, history-taking and physical examination, gerontology and geriatrics, and communications skills.

Registered Nursing programs are two, three, or four years in length. Associate degree, diploma, and bachelor's degree programs are designed to prepare people to promote health care and provide patient care. Bachelor's degree programs also are designed to prepare people for leadership positions in hospitals, clinics, and schools. Master's and doctoral degree programs in Nursing are designed to prepare clinical specialists, nurse clinicians, teachers, and administrators for hospitals, clinics, community agencies, and schools of nursing, as well as researchers and nursing theorists.

Psychiatric Technician programs are designed to prepare people to work with the mentally ill and mentally disabled. A few schools in California offer certificate and degree programs. You must have a high school diploma or its equivalent, and complete testing processes to be admitted to the program. Typical course work includes psychology, growth and development, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, psychiatric interviewing techniques, pharmacology, theory, and clinical experience in caring for medical, surgical, psychiatric, and developmentally disabled patients. Psychiatric technicians are licensed by the Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners.

Licensed Vocational Nurse programs are usually one year in length and prepare people to provide basic nursing care to people of all ages.

Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide programs are designed to prepare people to become Nurse Assistants and Home Health Aides. Nursing Assistants assist nurses with the psychological and physical care of the patient in the skilled nursing facility. The Home Health Aide also assists the nurse and the family with meeting these needs of the patient in the setting of the patient's home. A few schools in California offer certificate programs. You must have a high school diploma or the equivalent and pass a test in reading and writing basic English to be admitted to the program. Typical course work includes emphasis on geriatric health care. There is a great demand for workers who have the Home Health Aide certificate.

Most four-year and Community Colleges offer the first year of bachelor's degree requirements which can be transferred to a school offering a bachelor's degree in Nursing.

Vocational Nurses and Registered Nurses must be licensed by the State Board of Nursing. For details see Preparation for Occupation: Registered Nurses or Licensed Vocational Nurses.

PROGRAM ADMISSION: Most nursing programs are limited in enrollment, with competition for available slots. Students often must make separate applications for admission--both to the college and to its school of nursing. An interview, an aptitude test, and an excellent academic background may be required for admission to Nursing programs.

TYPICAL COURSE WORK: Most longer programs include all or most of the following:
Basic NutritionChemistry
General PsychologyHuman Anatomy
Human DevelopmentMicrobiology
Nursing SciencePharmacology
Physiology

Course-related experience in hospitals is an integral part of all programs. The longer bachelor's degree programs also include general education requirements such as English composition and speech. See school catalogs for a complete description of course work.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: Requirements vary with school, type of program, and program length. See college catalogs for details.
