10th Grade Checklist For College Admission

If you are currently in the 9th grade, please use this checklist next fall to begin your college planning. Remember, getting into the college of your choice will be competitive, so begin your preparation in the 10th grade!

September-October

1. Have a counselor explain what the college-prep and career path course options are at your school.
2. Began to do personal research on eureka.org, for careers, college majors, and colleges that interest you. Email EUREKA @ info@eurekanet.org if you can not find information on a career or college that you are interested in.
3. Attend College Information Days when possible.
4. Begin to discuss college and financing college with your parents.

November

1. Talk with other college bound students for information on college choices and opportunities.
2. Set-up a college planning discussion group with interested classmates. You can share information and support each other in following through on your planning.
3. Talk with family, counselors, friends about your plans, and how they might help you.
4. Keep your My Planner page on eureka.org updated as you change your career and educational goals.

December

1. Visit college web sites for information, catalogs and visitation policies.
2. Plan college campus visits with your family or your school's college network, or with members of your college planning group.
3. Visit eureka.org, view your planner, and see if you want to change college or career goals.
NOTE:
4. If you have a career in mind, and know of a local company that hires people for the career you are interested in, contact the company and ask if you can interview someone on the staff that performs that job. If you think you are interested in running your own business, use some of your holiday time to visit the local Chamber of Commerce and learn about the business makeup of your community. They will also be able to get you in contact with local business owners.

January

1. Review your grades with your teachers and counselor. Get guidance from them on what areas of your studies are in most need of improvement.
2. Plan a strategy for getting grades and the SAT/ACT scores you want. You still have time to improve your knowledge and grades in some subject areas. (Your strategy could include review of test taking skills and practice on specific skill areas.) If you and your parents think it may assist you, you may want to enroll in a test preparation course. If you begin to prepare now, it will be much easier in the 11th or 12th grade when you take your test.

February & March

1. Choose your top 5-10 colleges.
2. Collect information on them, and discuss your selections with your parents or guardians.
3. Explore careers in more depth, collecting information, and perhaps doing information interviews.
4. Begin thinking about summer, and what you may like to do that is related to your future.

April & May

1. Research and find out what colleges in your local area offer programs for high school students during the summer.
2. Attend college and career fairs that may be offered at your school.
3. Research what volunteer experiences may be available for you that can give you some experience in a work environment.

May - August

1. Get involved in some college or work related experience. Get ideas from parents, teachers, friends, and the Job Search Guide in EUREKA.
2. Make some decisions on classes for fall, and if available, what Career Pathway you want to enroll in as well.
