The hidden impacts civil engineers have to the society as a whole are testament to creating a magnetic pull toward this rewarding profession. New irrigation techniques created such as tertiary water treatment plants and the development of future transportation methods allow civil engineers to touch every life. Civil engineers create new techniques for water treatment problems and apply new irrigation methods. Solving transportation problems and addressing environmental issues are also within the scope of civil engineering. Civil engineers have an interest in the development of future energy sources and the use of energy supplies. These reasons alone give one purpose to pursue civil engineering; however, without the help of the Eureka Program, I would have never considered this valuable profession.

I returned to the Eureka Program to help in my search for appropriate colleges. From the selection of engineering colleges, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo became my top choice. Applying early decision in the winter of 2000 resulted in a reward beyond my biggest dreams-I was accepted. |

The first time using the Eureka Program was my freshman year of high school. Most students in my class were eager to be skipping a Biology lecture, but the rest of us were curious to see our interests transform into possible career opportunities. As for myself, my interest in math and science led me to the engineering category. Never before had I known how many fields caught my attention: aeronautical, chemical, civil, material, plastics. These specialties held my interest throughout high school. However, as each school year ended, my search narrowed. Finally, in my senior year, civil engineering proved to be my calling. Viewing the circumstances in my own community led me to pursue a career that benefits people and the environment. With its focus on helping community and the environment, civil engineering became my major of choice. Again I returned to the Eureka Program to help in my search for appropriate colleges. From the selection of engineering colleges, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo became my top choice. Applying early decision in the winter of 2000 resulted in a reward beyond my biggest dreams-I was accepted.
I could not be more happy-accepted at my first choice college and placed in a major that I will enjoy. So while many students learn and use this program, I can say that the Eureka Program has enabled me to find a college and a career. Without the Eureka Program, I would not be preparing for my first year at Cal Poly or be in a major that will affect my life and others.
